Dear Mac friends:
Many thanks to Charlie Hutchens, Rich Fitzgibbon, John Hamill, Peter Carras, Jon Smith, Dhundi Pokhrel, David Szymanski, Aidan Honnold, Quinn Glabicki, Justin Giebel and Dave Sevick for joining me last Friday for our weekly workday at our Goodwill Computer Recycling Center “annex.”
If it’s mid-July, we must have a flood. Just like last summer, Wednesday, July 10’s torrential rains backed up the drains adjacent to our work area. As we had almost everything sitting off the floor on pallets, we were not very affected. We just had to move some stuff around so the carpet water vacuum could get to the wet spots.
The unintended consequence was another short-notice move of a lot of stuff. Goodwill is moving a program into the large room adjacent to ours, and we had to vacate the space we were using for storage. Dave leased a truck for Computer Reach so the Mac stock they collected there after we refurbished them could be moved out fast. Our new volunteers played moving boxes instead of zapping PRAM…
When Dave came back with the truck, it was loaded with a huge load of de-manufactured material and taken to Goodwill. Still no deliveries of donated Macs, and we’re completely out of containers to put carcasses for Goodwill pickup.
Among them were about 70 G5 and Intel iMacs that were “long-term” fixers. As Marty is unavailable to us now, “long-term” has become “never.” So we topped the 63 Macs de-manufactured two weeks previously. It seems I never will cease entering de-manufactured serial numbers into our database…
We’re still holding at that 3,475 number of refurbished Macs.
We will gather again on Friday, July 19 at 2400 East Carson St. on Pittsburgh’s South Side. We open about 8:30 a.m., break for lunch at the Double Wide Grill (lunch: $12 up) across the street about 11:45, and leave about 3:30 p.m. You’re welcome to come anytime during the work day. We hope to see you there!
