Dear Mac friends:
Many thanks to Charlie Hutchens, John Hamill, Peter Carras, Jon Smith, Judy Schall, and new volunteers Dhundi Pokhvel and Heather Schall Luca for joining me last Friday for our weekly workday at our Goodwill Computer Recycling Center “annex.” Also joining us were 21 volunteers from Liberty Mutual and Safeco Insurance Companies who signed up through Pittsburgh Cares.
With the largest horde of volunteers ever, we devoted the day to de-manufacturing everything of questionable value. Frankly, so much was done that I’ll spend all of this coming Friday morning tallying up the serial numbers. There were 23 eMac hulks and too-many-to-count laptops scattered about waiting for containers to hold of the the de-manufactured parts. Roughly estimating, I think there was about a year’s worth of de-manufacturing work done when you consider our normal pace of picking away at it while we have other stuff on the bench.
This week will see more re-imaging of current stock, and we will continue to clean out the hopeless Macs for de-manufacturing.
We will gather again on Friday, June 28 at 2400 East Carson St. on Pittsburgh’s South Side. We’ll be taking off on Friday, July 5 so the holiday weekend is intact. If you have old directions from Dave, please note the Citgo gas station on the corner is now a Sunoco. We open about 8:30 a.m., break for lunch at the Double Wide Grill (lunch: $12 up) across the street about 11:45, and leave about 3:30 p.m. You’re welcome to come anytime during the work day. We hope to see you there!
